Ariel brings light to dark times. She is described as the ‘Lioness of God’ and ‘Angel for natural elements’. In this interpretation, she is somewhere between an ethereal showgirl from a bygone era and a battle-weary eco-warrior in distressed and tarnished armour. There is also a nod to the beautiful seaside-dwelling ‘peace statue‘ that marks the dividing point between Brighton and Hove (my home town)
For the original, I’ve combined traditional media (acrylic, wax, pastels, ink) with elements found in the street and on the shoreline, including seabird feathers, waste paper, and fruit netting.
My brilliant printer, Harwood King, has reproduced the original in the most phenomenal detail, and has added a smoky and feathery broken border, which adds to the otherworldly look and feel of the piece.
