Dawn in the (not) Pink City – Jaipur
Wood smoke, chai spices (the real stuff), marigold garlands, holy cows (and their copious dung), flower and vegetable markets buzzing with colour and rapid trade, religious bells and morning worship. Jaipur is not pink, it’s full of old terracotta buildings and the ones that have been painted pink to retro-fit a description which dates back to George V – and a mistaken belief that the city had been painted his favourite colour!
India has some chronic refuse problems, which while terrible for the environment, did supply me with some weird and wonderful found media.
Jaipur is one of the most painterly places I have ever visited and this is my sensory response to it.
