Hierophany study ii – (Original)

£275.00

The word ‘Hierophany’ refers to a manifestation of the sacred or holy in the physical world.

It is a combination of two Greek words:
* hieros (ἱερός): meaning “sacred,” “holy,” or “divine.”
* phainein (φαίνειν): meaning “to reveal,” “to show,” “to bring to light,” or “to appear.”
Therefore, “hierophany” literally means “a showing forth of the sacred.”

Author Katherine May talks about finding personal places of worship within nature or antiquity; an ancient tree or woodland glade. A medieval well or a natural spring.
It’s about a sense of faith, rather than religion; the places where we feel plugged into a power far greater than our little human husks!

I know that many see / feel it when communing with the waves in an open water swim. For me it’s woodland. The sensory feast of sun-dappled woods. I think it’s the heady combination of the light, the palpable energy of being surrounded by all that silent life and the sheer increase in oxygen. The divine made manifest.

This little collection of studies were created from some quick alfresco sketches. As ever, they are about capturing my sensory response rather than actually trying to paint a view.
