Nereids of Now (Giclee print)

I am not a sea swimmer. It’s not for me (yet anyway), but I walk my dog by the sea most days, and I love seeing the tribe of plucky women waddling down to the water’s edge, stripping off multiple layers through gritted teeth, then emerging from the water looking pink-faced but calm.

This sea sisterhood inspired my ‘Nereids’ series. I am enchanted by this idea of women gathering to immerse themselves in the infinite power of the sea, surrendering to it, and finding an elemental connection amidst the noisy busyness of being human.

I took my colour palette directly from the heritage shade of rich pastel green used for all the Brighton seaside infrastructure, and the ever-changing palette of sea, sky and the rich dark peaty shade of the Nereids wet locks is taken from parts of the local coastline.
